Day 2: 8/29/2008. 0610. Sent by Kavara Vaughn.

The call came in from Kavara this morning at 6:10 a.m. jlb

“It is currently 5:30 a.m. with a start time of 5:13 a.m. We are at mile 81 on Close Mountain Road, about 5 miles outside of Thomas, West Virginia.

We were woken by the smoke alarm at 3:40 a.m. but those 20 lost minutes of sleep were for a worthy cause. Gene and John were up early fixing us Canadian bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches for the road. We were out the door by 4:50 a.m. A tractor trailer loaded down with logs marked our end-point last night. So we were a bit apprehensive when we passed a similar truck coming up the hill on our way to the start. Our marker was there when we arrived though. Adam was having some GI issues this morning which included puking behind the truck. Thirty seconds after his last puke he said, “…lets just walk”. So they were off at 5:13 a.m. They were running up a 1 mile stretch of hill within minutes. They are currently headed down a dark, foggy, tractor trailer laden Route 219.” kv

  1. You guys have alot of folks pulling for you out in cyber land. Make us proud and know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for the updates K(Savanna)V and JL.

  2. I heard from John McGrath at about 9:30 am. He was sitting in his car waiting for the boys to arrive at the stables at Blackwater Falls before the trail turns uphill onto Canaan Mountain. He reports Adam said he didn’t sleep so well last night. Mongold responded “then we should just run all night!” McGrath put in a serious big effort of help for the boys. He put them up in his house in Davis as well as driving from Shepherdstown to join Gene Lewis to help the guys. John, you aren’t such a bad guy after all.

  3. About 10:05 they emerged from the darkness of Blackwater Falls SP at the petting zoo. Gene Lewis is going to hang with them for a little bit. Mongol was eyeing up one of the goats for food, but luckily he was short a bow.

Mid 60s, misty off and on. Sun trying to peek through. Perfect Canaan conditions to get nice and dirty and wet.

Paul, “Bad” is relative. Just trying to be more like you.

    Cheers from Tucker County

  4. Go, boys go! What an amazing-blazing trail your adventures are leaving for us! Could all of us following you have a cast of characters, please? I know some grumpy people, but I’d love to know who this Grumpy person is.
Now I’m just going to say what is on everyone’s mind…sabotage! First “someone” tries to unseat our Beloved President in such a demeaning manner and now this “five-star treatment” the boys were treated to on their first night! I thought we’d found utopia here within the confines of this club! On the other hand, Gene and John, the kids and I are running up to Big Bear to pick berries in a few minutes. We’ll be real tired and hungry from the run when we get back…

  5. Bradley told us not to bother God with the small detail of his illness prior to starting, but apparently something has carried him through! Tell Adam our prayers are with him for strength, as well.

  6. Grumpy Wayne is Mongold’s dad. He must be on his best behavior around me, Mongold is always grumpier. Not too worried about Adam, I helped crew him at MMT and he looked like death for 80 of the 100 miles. He also puked early in that run too. I often feel sick when I am running with Mongold…

  7. If you searched the world over, you would never meet a nicer man than Wayne Mongold! He must just be grumpy around Bradley. What in the world would cause that?
